Chapter Seven

Jane yelped, but Haas grabbed her arm and dragged her forward. They dove behind a large rock as a second shot pinged off the ground, so close that the dirt sprayed across her boot.

Haas dug his phone out of his pocket and threw it to her as they scrambled along, keeping low as they moved further through the rocks. "Password is 6234. Call 911." He went down on one knee and dropped down behind a rock. "Tell them we're at Silver Rock Notch."

Jane flattened herself on the ground as Haas went up on one knee and fired. She whispered a silent prayer for cell service as she unlocked the phone. Her heart sank. "No bars, Haas."

"Give it a second." He fired again, and she heard someone yell to take cover.

She waited, watching the screen, her heart pounding as dirt sprayed up around her, and bullets pinged off the rocks. Please. Please. Please. Then, suddenly, a bar appeared. Then two. Dear God. Yes.

She quickly dialed 9-1-1, flinching at each shot. She could barely hear the operator when he answered. "We're being shot at by three people" she shouted. "We're at Silver Rock Notch. We need help! Our truck died, and we hiked up. Help!"

The operator said something, but she couldn’t hear it over the gunshots. "The people shooting at us are Dick Young, Harry Young, and Walter Young. This is Jane Callaway. Haas Carter and I are the ones being shot at." She covered her head as another bullet hit the dirt too close to her. "We are returning fire," she yelled. "We're hiding in the rock outcropping, so don't shoot us!"

The operator said something again, but it was right as Haas fired again, drowning him out.

"Hurry," she said. "I can't hear you. Send help. Silver Rock Notch," she repeated. "We're hiding behind the rocks being shot at and returning fire. Hurry!" She heard the operator say something about staying on the line, so she left it on and dropped the phone. "Do you have any more guns?"

Haas didn't look over. "At home. I didn't bring them with me tonight."

"What's in the backpack?"

"Food. Water. An axe. Bullets. A hunting knife. A rope. Not much, but it's what I had." He shrugged off the backpack. "Can you grab me the boxes of bullets? I think I have four in there."

Jane dug into the bag. "There's only three." She set the boxes of bullets out for Haas, then grabbed the axe and leaned back against the rocks, watching the woods behind them.

Waiting for the Youngs to show up. She knew they'd be circling around behind them. There were three of them. One would exchange fire, and the others would circle around. "How long will your ammunition last?" she asked.

"With three boxes, I can get us about ten minutes at this rate. Fifteen if I push it."

Fifteen minutes. "How long until help can get here?"

"It depends where they are. Could be a half hour."

She looked over at him. "Seriously?"

"Yeah. If they have a plane in the sky nearby, it could be five minutes.
